Although there were a few data collection platforms in Antarctica, which transmited to satellites, SPSDL was the first system

to use steerable antennas to transmit and receive from polar-orbiting satellites. This system sent data through polar-orbiting scientific satellites

between the Pole (90S) and McMurdo (78S) several times every day for over 8 years (1984 -1993).
